I assume theyre Canada Geese (lol)...they werent honking in normal fashion though! When I first heard this weird sound (hard to describe...like honking, but different), I went outside and looked around. It finally occured to me to look UP... WOW great shots Jen!! We see geese daily now heading south for the winter but I doubt I could get as good photographs of them as you have.
The sound that you heard was probably the sound of their wings passing through the air. The large flocks of geese make a loud humming noise when they fly over here.
I really liked seeing this series of foto's. Geese have been flying overhead here all evening. Some of those foto's look like "connect the dots" patterns.
