My sister-in-law, gsdruth, has been a member here for about a year. She would come to me with questions. I finally told her where I got most of my answers... here! I convinced her to join so she could cut out the middle man. Anyhow, since I didn't have to work yesterday, I was in the mood for plant shopping and wanting to go to some place different. A while back, she had told me about a place not too far from her home, down by the coast in a town called Seabrook (my brother used to have his boat docked there for years). So I ask her for the name of the place and said I wanted to check it out. She said... I was thinking of going too. So we went together. The place is huge! We looked at everything from herbs to trees. Scattered throughout the grounds were fountains, working and for sale. Lots of statues & sculptures. And pots. One I really liked, but... $2000 is just a little out of my price range. And there were lots of yard decorations... wooden, metal, stone. And coastal stuff... shells, fishies, pelicans. Great "gift shop" too. And lots of friendly, knowledgeable and helpful staff. I didn't go in wanting or looking for anything in particular, but I did want to get something white. So after several hours of shopping our wagon was full. I came out with two Daisy Shasta 'Crazy Daisy' (the white something I decided on); 3 Amaranths; 3 coneflowers; a red hot poker; and a Salvia 'Wendy's Wish'. new plants from Maas ( photo / image / picture from cherylad's Garden ) When the checkout lady gave me my total, I said "That's all? I did good!" I had a number in mind of what I could spend, and this was just below that amount. Gsdruth got about the same amount of plants... and some of the same ones, the Salvia, Amaranths and poker. She too was happy with her final price. Know what? This was the only time I've gone plant shopping with someone! Definitely makes it more fun, but can be a little dangerous with someone tempting you to "go ahead and get it... you know you want it." So back at her house, I got to check out how her flowers made it through the winter and see what new one's she planted plus checked out my brother's veggie garden. Everything is looking great! Makes me wish I lived a little further south so I could grow some of those tropicals! We're already planning on another excursion, probably next month, to a place in Houston that specializes in Natives. Can't wait! So I finally get home. Unload the plants and give them a little drink. Empty out my pockets and looked at my receipt. No wonder the final price was so good... they didn't charge me for one of the Daisies! Ahhhh.... what a day! Edited to add: Forgot that I also got two Black Eyed Susans
Great looking plants. Looking forward to photos of where they find their new home. I have been resisting the temptaion to buy more plants before our vacation trip. I won't be here for a week to keep them watered as they settle in...just hope there are some decent ones left for me at the end of May.
Blimey Cheryl, you two really did do well, didn't you. I'm with Toni--I can't wait to see the plants in their new homes (both you and your s.i.l.). You really did do well.
Now THAT'S a shopping trip! So glad you found what you wanted, needed, and just had-to-have. Is you sister-in-law as much of an enabler as Toni? It would seem so.
Sounds lovely. I got some plants this week too. I need to get at my yard more, and take care of all the ones I have. I should have a weed farm, they grow abundantly here!
That's a nice haul and story Cheryl. And what no better way to spend your time than with family and a fellow Stewbie!
It's always dangerous t go shopping with another plantoholic. I always end up buying so many plants that when I get home I have no idea where I'm going to put them. :-? I'm glad you enjoyed your day Cheryl and I hope you'll show us all your new babies when you get them planted up.
Toni... They're all planted now and once they start to show off, I'll definitely post photos. Good luck on finding some good summer stock after your vacation. Sjoerd... I really thought I had overspent by a lot, because I wasn't keeping track of the prices. Jane... NO ONE is more of an enabler than Toni! AA... what all did you recently get? Frank... yep... the plants are all very healthy. I think she had as much fun as I did. Maybe next time, we can get my niece to come along with us? Eileen... Funny you should mention about no knowing where to put new plants. I didn't have that problem this time because I knew of empty spaces that needed filled. But GSD kept saying... "I don't know where I'm going to put it." Then she'd get another one... "where am I going to put this one?" Ronni... yes... selecting their homes and getting them in the ground is so much fun. I actually told them... "welcome! Now grow pretty for me!" Thanks everyone!
