First a story... There's a cute little resale shop I pass by all the time. I've stopped in on occasion just to see what they have. Typical sort of resale items. They've always had a sign out front saying "plants" but I really haven't noticed much... until the other day. So I made I point of going by there today on my way to the grocery store. My mission... I was looking for Amaryllis and a Camellia bush. He indeed had a few pots of Amaryllis... and at a very cheap price. He showed me the other things he had... and this was NOT stuff he's bought off a truck, you could tell they were plants he's grown himself. We had a nice little visit talking about plants and where I was from... how long I lived here, etc... as he showed me around. He asked if I liked unusual plants... I quickly said "Whatcha got?" We walked to the front of the building and he showed me this shrub, picked a leaf off it, crumpled it and said "What's that smell like to you?" Peanut Butter! It really did! He didn't know the "real name of it"... said he just calls it his Peanut Butter Bush! As we walked back to the other side of the building, I noticed he had a cute little pond. He had some Irises planted next to it. I asked if they were Louisiana Black Iris. He said they were yellow, but he's heard of the black one's but didn't have any. I told him that I had quite a few of the black ones and would be thinning some out a little later. He asked if I'd like to trade! Of course I would! I go inside to pay for my plants and what do I see right there in front of me? A little angel that's too cute to pass up! angel ( photo / image / picture from cherylad's Garden )
Lovely story Cheryl, i expect you will be making tracks for that shop for some time to come,..if i spotted that Angel myself i would have bought it,..nice purchase!,..sort of have a soft spot for Angels and Pixies,..in fact i had a thread going for years by that name.
Thanks Philip and Daisy... He was such a nice man. I must have been there for at least 45 minutes. And yes... now I have no excuse NOT to stop by! Who knows what else he would like to trade for... and what other little treasures I'll find tucked away.
Now that certainly sounds like the kind of contact I'd love to have. Did you buy the 'peanut butter bush' by any chance? I've never heard of a plant that smells of PB before. Your angel would make a really a nice addition to any garden and looks as though she's already settled in with you and found a great place to sit on your bench. Did you buy any plants Cheryl from your new friend? Not that I'm in the least bit nosey you understand.
Clerodendrum trichotomum (Harlequin Glorybower) I just added the common name Peanut Butter Bush to it in our data base. Paul James on the HGTV website suggests planting it near Iris pallida, some think they smell like grape jelly, to bring back some childhood memories. Adorable angel too. I imagine you will soon become his favorite customer
Well Cheryl, you got plants, an angel, a future trade, and a new gardening friend. I'd say that was a very good stop you made!
Eileen... I did buy the Amaryllis. The Peanut Butter plant wasn't for sale. Next time I go in there... I'm going to ask if he has another one... or if he could start one for me. Toni... thanks for the link... that does look like the flowers he described! I'm going to have to jot down that name and let him know what he's got. And Iris pallida that smells like grape jelly?? Wouldn't that be wonderful together! Jane... I AM very happy with my little excursion to the shop. And he told me about a Daylily farm that's just 20 miles away in the town of Kenefick. I didn't get directions... was too scared I'd drive over there!
