Has anyone grown "Angels Trumpets",Brugmansia?,..a friend in the USA sent me some seeds,..these are Double Purple,..i read they are lethal where pets are concerned!,..however i can get around that,..below are the first six started in an indoor heated propagator. Due to the size they grow six will cover a big area. You sure have some healthy looking plants growing! I've grown Datura's from seed in previous years and they grew and bloomed well.
I've been keeping some Datura's growing for the last few years in containers. Mine are the one's referred to as "Ballerina" because of their lovely purple and white ruffles. This year will be the first year I try some "in ground". I will however make sure to keep at least a couple going in pots... just in case that doesn't work out. I've given out seeds and seedlings to one of my aunts. When one doesn't make it, she calls me up asking for "another one of those dancer plants". Gotta love her... mid-90s and still going pretty strong.
The soil here is rich,..lots of peat in it,..and always moist,."The Wet Midlands",..mists coming off the river and lake,..i just had a look at Daturas,..oh boy!,..if my Double Purple Angels are anything like those i will be over the moon. I am really excited over what both of you have grown,..i sure will have large sized flowers,..and tall plants,..knock on wood. Your Aunt has to be admired and complimented!. Angel's Trumpet Ballerina Purple: An Angel's Trumpet (Datura) with huge, fragrant double purple-and-white blooms and ornamental fruits. - Park Seed moderator's note: removed double posting see point 3.6 of usage rules
Yes Philip... that's the variety I have been keeping. However, mine have never been very fragrant... or least not a pleasant fragrance. They have always been just a little "sour" smelling to me. But that's okay... they sure are beauties!
Beauties they are!,..if mine grow i won't mind if the scent is not fragrant. They will replace the locations where my Fuchsia's stood,..i lost all six,..three species!,..with the heavy frost,..i had them for years.
You are so lucky to have good soil, the clay here has to amended every few years. Any starts I put down have to go in pots. I have both type angel trumpets, perianal and annual, the perineal ones are the wonderfully fragent ones. Perineal angel trumpets up 1 months growth ( photo / image / picture from featherphobia's Garden ) the one on the left is a white, the right one is yellow that turns to peach, they have been here for 10 years Seedling (in the middle) annual double purple ( photo / image / picture from featherphobia's Garden ) These are grown in a pot from seeds
Thanks for that featherphobia,..i have great expectations at this stage,..you having yours in place for 10 years is a good recommendation,..though your climate would be warmer in winter,..yes its the Double Purple i have started,..and growing fast, .
