This morning it is foggy and overcast. Along the front deck, I have tomato cages around my asiatic lillys to hold them up. The hummers set on the cages to rest in between feeding bouts. Every time the female went to the feeder to eat, the male would chase her away. Then when he went to eat, she would chase him. Finally they both got tired and landed on the cage to rest. They both sat there for about 15 minutes. Then the chase would be on again. All of this lasted for about 45 minutes. While I was watching this, I noticed the leaves shaking in the top of the small oak tree. Then I saw the tail of a squirrel. Next thing I see is the squirrel falling on the ground. The stupid thing fell out of the tree! He stands up and looks all around to see if anyone saw him do that. Then a little later the same squirrel starts climbing the tree that has the woodpeckers nest in it. He gets almost to the nest hole and all of a sudden he is being attacked by 2 balls of black, white and red feathers. He actually jumped about 12 ft. to the ground to escape them. I tried getting pictures of all this, but it was too dark and foggy for them to turn out.

Sounds like an interesting and exciting morning CK. Would love to have been there to watch all the activity with you. It really made me smile to picture the squirrel falling out of the tree. I hope it doesn't get into the woodpeckers nest. The parent birds seem to be doing an excellent job though of protecting it from him.
