When leaving work today, I spottted these wooden racks by the dumpster.

First thing that I thought was "I sure like this new office complex we moved to! They throw out good stuff!"

    :D

Second thing... remember earlier this year I purchased a mobile greenhouse to help protect the potted plants during wintertime? Works okay, but is a bit on the flimsy side. These will certainly be taking it's place this winter!
Some paint to protect the wood. Some plywood cut for shelves that can be moved to whatever height I need.
Staple on some plastic (leaving a flap "door" of course). I can wheel them inside the garage during freezing temps... and wheel them back out to enjoy the sunshine!
Well... that's my plan anyway! Now if I can just keep Hubby and my brother from stealing them! :smt018

Wheels for plants, riding in style. Definitely a bonus find, perhaps pink paint will keep the wolves at bay.

Why don't folks around here throw away great stuff like that? As soon as I saw your pictures I thought of plant shelves in them too. It's an added bonus that they have wheels. I can already see them painted up and ready to put plants in them. Cheryl, with your imagination, they're going to look brilliant!! :stew2:

Way to go Cheryl!!! Instead of plywood though, what about that galvanized benchtop wire the greenhouses use. When you are doing shelves this would let more light through and wouldn't be as heavy when you are moving it. I've seen it advertised in the Farm Tech catalog. (I actually thought about investing in some for my stuff). I'm sure there are other places to get it and maybe even locally for you, but this gives you an idea of where to start, if you are interested.

That's a great idea Carolyn! Plus water would drain instead of soaking into the wood. I've got 'til winter to find some. Wonder if the shelves from the "flimsy" one would fit? I'll have to do some measuring. My brother goes to alot of "junk" auctions, I'll have to ask him to keep an eye out for some. Or... wouldn't it be nice if someone just placed some by the dumpster for me?

    :D

Now regarding that paint job. I was thinking, wouldn't a stain or deck treatment last longer? These will be outdoors except when there are freezing temperatures. I don't want to keep painting them. Thoughts?

I think a wood stainer and preservative would be the way to go Cheryl. Paint would only chip off or peel with time. Over here you can get some pretty nice colours in wood stainer these days.

Stain with a wood preservative is much better, and a load of colors are available.
Yep, better than paint. I can change my paint vote to stain? Yes?

Stain would last longer then seal it with Marine Varnish and it will be impervious to whatever the weather drops on it....and bird poop too. ;)
