I was wondering if it was possible to grow you own ginger plant? Does anyone had any experience with it?
I grow ginger year round. I usually plant 2 buds and I get lots of ginger when it matures after 10months or so. I plant my ginger under a tree on the ground so that it is fully shaded and only get indirect sun. If you are going to plant it in a container I would suggest that it is at least 2ft in diameter and a foot deep so that there is enough growing space for the rhizomes. To start off you can buy some fresh ginger and leave it in a warm place in the kitchen if you like. When the bud start to sprout, break off that part from the comb and plant it. Planting ginger is easy. Goodluck
Re: Growing Ginger Thanks for the suggestions. I planted one bud today so we'll see how it goes. Any suggestions on watering? The site made it sound like it should be pretty moist.
Yes just moist not drenched. Mine is in the ground and I water it once a week. Since you have it in a pot, err ....am I right? alternate days should be fine.
I have planted mine on the ground too below my star apple tree like two weeks ago. I water it everyday since it's very warm and dry this time of year...
Apa Kahbar, KK? I agree with KK, it's easy to grow, but frost is a killer. It also makes a very attractive small shrub, with fragrant small white flowers. Galangal grows easily as well, in much the same way.
