Is there anyone on the Stew that grows dahlias? I haven't really grown very many & did get some new tubers last spring. I'd like to know how others handle them. For instance, the tuber on 1 I really like didn't multiply at all.I dug up the same thing I planted.I know because the name was stamped on it.It did bloom. I had bought a dahlia tuber 3 years back. It blooms every year. I dig up the tubers and store it in peat moss in my garage. I had divided the tubers and planed one more - the plant did come up but didnt bloom. I guess it was too small. Here is my dahlia in bloom this year Dahlia'12 ( photo / image / picture from Tina's Garden )
When we had them, we would dig up the bunch of tubers, with some soil on them, not clean any, put in newspapers and then plastic bags (let some air in, not tie very tight) and then in the cellar. Dad's with grapes and wine, so we got a real long cellar. Temps constant, cool but not freezing. BEWARE, I know that some small growing dahlias are really annuals, and don't produce tubers, but seeds. Am I right?
I grow Dahlia's! I have some tubers that my Mom gave me years ago and every year they multiply. I plant them indoor in pots early spring and plant them out after the threat of frost is past. They do best in the cooler temperatures of Autumn and bloom until the frost kills them. I dig up the tubers after the first killing frost and store them in bushel baskets in my basement until I pot them up again in spring. The Dahlia's you buy in cell packs at the gardencenters are usually seed grown, but they do produce tubers. I have on occasion saved those tubers too, and it takes a little longer for those tubers to grow and multiply. They are usually smaller varieties. The larger varieties are usually found for sale in small bags in tuber form and are a few years old. SewNsow, I would keep the tuber of the Dahlia you like and give it another year to multiply.
I have tried to store them.many people different ways.Mine dry up. Think our old time ceallar with wood burner too warm. But going to trya nd store in mud room-not heated up warm enough water doesn't freeze. put cannas, glads and dahlias in coolers with news paper
You sure do have some pretty dahlias.I'm just going to put in bag with a little peat moss & watch that they don't get too dry. Sure would like to keep them.Only place I have is down basement.I can look at them when I go down to freezer. sNs
Lady who has farm next to us -has old time root cellar. My basement not to go have tea.But wood burner too hot Dry . Just dug glads yesterday. Going to dry and keep them no more time.also got few more to dig.
