I was a very heavy smoker for 52 Years. I tried to quit many times and tried everything available to help me quit. Three Years ago I needed an aneurism removed from my aorta. The Cardiovascular surgeon refused to operate unless I quit smoking. I explained that I had tried but couldn’t and he recommended that I try the electronic cigarettes. I bought a disposable e-cig on the way home and did not have a cigarette for two days. I then ordered an e-cig starter kit and haven’t had a cigarette for three Years. When I quit smoking, I was spending $5500 per Year on cigarettes. Now I am spending about $480 per Year on e-cig’s and no cough or withdrawal. If you are a smoker, give them a try.

Good luck with your good work, quitting can be a real problem.

Thankfully I was able to quit cold turkey Aug 1st, 2004. I don't think the ecigs were available then? But knitting everyone in the family a poncho, scarf or hat for Christmas and watching the LOTR movies about 10 times through the month of August helped me a lot.

I also used the money I would have spent on cigs to buy plants and yarn every week for about the first 4 months...amazing how much I was throwing away on smokes.

I have tried to convince my father to stick with the electronic cigarettes to kick the habit. He does enjoy them but it seems he can't shake the old habits of the traditional type. He spends a lot of time outside on the farm so for example we he is on the tractor he doesn't enjoy fumbling for an e-cigarette. With regular cigarettes it doesn't matter if he drops and loses it.

I also try to convince him from the financial angle by totting up how much he will save a year. He is always shocked at the figure but obviously the figure is not large enough.

Two of my coworkers at my day job use them and they love them. They love being able to take a quick smoke break while baling cardboard in back or collecting shopping carts from the parking lot and they dont have to worry about nasty smoke or only getting a few puffs from a cig and having to toss the rest.

I quit in 2004. I think the eCigs were just starting to be advertised then. I'd quit originally for 20+ years back in the early 70s, when I got pregnant with my first child, and stayed quit until the extreme stress from my abusive marriage took its toll and I started up again in the mid 90's. It took three tries for me, the last one with the aid of nicotine lozenges which I slowly reduced over the next 6 months or so.

I am always careful though to tell people I am an ex-smoker, not a non-smoker. I feel the way about cigarettes the way alcoholics or addicts feel about their drug of choice....I will always be addicted to cigs (quitting is one of the hardest things I've ever done) but now I'm in recovery.

I quit cold turkey almost 5(maybe more I've lost count!) DH still smokes and has expressed wanting to quit, so I have bought him a few ecigs. He really doesn't seem any closer to quitting. I always said that people can't quit until they are really "ready" - took me a few years to decide that I was "ready" to quit before I did. I think ecig or not, you still need to be ready.

Going to hospital. Seeing best Friend dying of lung cancer. She made me promise to quit. I threw carton away. Chewed on ice and had baby carrot hanging from my mouth. So glad I did

Thankfully, I never acquired the habit, though I tried once as a small kid. My father and other relatives smoked like chimneys. I have a lot of friends and family who have tried for years and years to quit. Some eventually won the battle and are now smoke-free, some gave up trying. I have a sister in law who is using those things. She says they are helping.

One of my sons picked up the habit from no good friends. Thankfully, he had just about quit before he died.

Many smokers pay the ultimate price for the habit and lose their lives to cancer or emphysema or COPD.

I was a second hand smoker my first 19 years [20 if you count prenatal exposure], and have lots of breathing problems from the smoking of others. I am on several meds to help my breathing so far. I am sure quitting helps one's lungs improve, but not so sure they "recover" from it.
