I started a dinosaur quilt for a grandson back in the spring. It's sitting in a box now waiting to be finished. I made him a dinosaur tote bag for Christmas. All of our family are getting tote bags or aprons for Christmas. It's something that I do.

My daughter (of 11)and I started teaching ourselves how to knit but we've hit a brick wall after learning the casting on. We're having problems getting further. I like to crochet though. She like to make crafts with beads.

I don't use patterns. I measure and cut. Each one turns out a little different. Just cut the sides the size you want and cut the ends to match adding the width you want and cut a bottom the same width. I make a bag out of print and the lining out of solid and sew each one and then put the lining inside the bag and sew it at the top and add the handles. If I'm making the handles go under the bag, I add them first.
I don't have any pictures of it. Maybe I could lay it out on the table next time and see if it makes any sense. My mom taught me to sew and she didn't use patterns either.

    Petunia,
There are some good videos on how to knit at ehow.com. Also you can do a google on knitting. I took up knitting again this fall and found them helpful. The one thing that gets me is the instructions always say to wind the thread around your pinky finger - something I have never done.

The local library should have some how to knit books or videos too. I've never used my pinky finger either. I think it should be whichever finger you are comfy with and gives you the best control over the yarn.

If you can find the Big Book of Knitting by Katharina Buss, Amazon has it at reasonable prices since it is an older book. It is very helpful for learning the different cast on styles, knit, purl, decreasing, finishing, etc.

Thanks foe the info. From what I'm understanding the differance between the purling and knitting is which way the needles are going??? We've caught on to how to do the casting but from here seems to be confusing. Maybe I'll check out the library-thats one place I haven't checked yet.

The way the right needle goes into the loop and which side the yard is held on. Knit - the yarn is from the back, Purl-the yarn is from the front. Some may not actually carry the yarn on the front as they Purl but that is the easiest way I have found.
I taught myself more than 40 years ago using some very simple and basic instructions from a magazine, so much of the way I knit now is from making do with what I figured out was what the instructions were telling me.
    Works for me ;)

Another thing to note is that there are two types of knitting - Continental or English. The most common way is English. Here is a site that explains the difference along with a video.

My mother tried to teach me how to knit (English style) with no success. Years later, I taught myself how to knit and it was the Continental style of knitting. When she saw me knitting, she asked why was I holding the yarn and needles wrong. I just found that Continental style was easier for me.

I recently bought a machine and am learning to sew because I love quilts so much! Worked on a wall hanging today. I love applique, and have a lot to learn! Luckily there are several guilds in our area that are very helpful.

    kasey,

I sew lots , I mess with squares lots, but never had a quilt frame to do one.
    Hard on the fingers..

Not sure what applique covers ,but on another forum we make squares and make pictures on them. Like now it is Birdhouses and flowers. I am enjoying it.
Someone else sews the 3 layers together an makes Lap quilts ............And we pull a name for the winner.
