Anyone know if I can divide an athyrium in the fall?

    I have a large & healthy painted fern that I would like to propagate. Anyone have success doing it in the fall?

    I took this information for you from Garden Web:

    "The Japanese Painted Fern is easily divided, since it spreads by rhizones, you can remove a section of the rhizome (with a frond or growth bud attached) using a sharp knife or shovel. Pot the divisions in a moisture retentive potting mix and keep moist, in total shade, until they appear to be growing normally."

    Thanks Eileen. I have a long shade border that I am developing. I could pot some divisions up before winter, let them grow in a protected spot, and be ready for planting next May sometime.
