    Merry Christmas everyone!

I'm trying to remember an old Christmas song my grandmother used to sing to us when I was little. I can only remember part of it. Every year, I searched high and low for the rest of it but have never been able to find it. This year I thought -- maybe someone on Garden Stew will know! All the different backgrounds, traditions and memories... there must be hundreds of Christmas songs in our collective memories. For what it's worth, my Nanny was Irish, but I don't know if that matters. Here are the words that I remember.

"Eyes so bright, now shut tight,
    Weary heads at rest...
Dreams of sleds, and wax dolls heads,
And toys we love the best...
    By and by, very sly,
A jolly old elf.... (something something..)

It is one of my sweetest memories of my Nan singing this song. It is like a lullaby. If anyone knows the rest of it, I would be forever in your debt!

PS -- It's been snowing now for 15 hours and expected to go all through the night. It's a blizzard. Falling an inch an hour now... Wild.

I think it is something called or has the words

"It came upon a midnight clear"

or Maybe "Once upon a December"?
(it is from the story of Anastasia)

not sure unless I heard the melody

But when I play YOUR words to the melody in my head from Anastasia...it fits but I mix up alot of my songs from the past...

Sorry I can't help you out, DB. From the words, it sounds like it would have a sweet melody. Merry Christmas.

I've been hunting high and low, and I found this in some sort of net library:

    1. Eyes so bright, now shut tight, Wea-ry heads at rest,
    2. Sun's rays peep, rouse from sleep Hap - py girls and hoys;
    3. Din - ner's done, night has come, Tired and worn are they;

    Dream of sleds and
    Just half dreisea, they
    Doll all cracked,

wax- doll heads And toys they love the best By and by, re - ry sly A
do their best To man-u - f actnre noise. Oh, what fun, they've be-gun Their
clean dress blacked, Drumhead torn away, Gun won't shoot, horn won't toot,

jol - ly f el - low comes,
    stock-ingg to un - load,
    Blocks all lost but ten,

Drops his pack from off his back, And
    Ev-'ry - thing from a monkey-on-a-string,To a

The first hymn you mention is easily found. I need to go on YouTube and listen to it. :D

Droopy - I remember the line "drops his pack from off his back..." I'm going to check this link right now.

Thanks BW -- I'll have to check Anastasia.

KG -- it is a sweet melody. Esp the way my Gma sang it..

Droopy, Droopy, Droopy!!! You found it! I have to piece it together but that is it! I am just thrilled! Thank you sooooo much! You are my hero! Now if I can remember all the melody, I can sing it to my niece.

This link says the title is When Good Old Kris Comes 'Round by Harry C. Eldridge so I'm going to see if I can find more info.

No, that's the one below. I think yours was published in a Lady's Journal in 1902, you might try and contact them. :D

As for me being a hero I'm honoured, but I owe it all to Google.

The song is pretty obscure but apparently the library system in Atlantic County New Jersey has it in their sheet music library that goes back to 1900. It is interesting that my grandmother was from New Jersey -- her parents and sibs came from Ireland and they settled in Jersey City.

I've found another line -- the first of the chorus: "O jolly old St Nick, the world is glad you've come..."

Bluewolf -- the song from Anastasia is real pretty and the still from the movie make for interesting artwork too. Thanks.

Droopy -- I've googled this every way I could think of over the years to no avail, so you're still my hero!

    Great detective work Droopy!

DB I found a possible contact for you. The song you refer to is listed on this songbook:
    http://store.revels.org/awaketojoy.aspx

The songbook compiler is a certain Nym Cooke. You can read about him here:
    1/ http://www.angelfire.com/music5/nym_cooke/
    2/ http://www.ehs1.org/academics/directory ... rstletter=

Link /1 has his email address listed at the bottom of the page. Link /2 also provides an alternative email address if you click on his name.

If he knows the song then he'll definitely know the melody. I hope he can help you on your quest!

You guys are amazing!! Thank you from the bottom of my heart, for your interest and your efforts to help me find this song. I had all but given up.

Frank, what a great find! I just sent emails to both addresses for Mr Nym Cooke. It would be such a wonderful thing if I could track this song down after all this time.

I could buy the book too, if I don't hear from him. But it would be so neat if he would write back. In my email I told him how I came to find his name. I think it is a charming story, myself -- friends from Norway and Sweden helped me find him in Massachusetts!

    Fingers crossed, right!

Fingers crossed, absolutely. :D This just goes to show that a community on the net can find just about anything if it's there to find.
