It looks like a Kniphofia, common name Red-Hot Poker or Torch Lily. http://www.plantzafrica.com/plantklm/kniphofias.htm
Thank you!! Thank you soooo much. I did plant some of those years ago but they never came up, then suddenly this one did, and by then I had no idea what it was, since I had replanted a lot of other things since then.
