Can anyone recommend varieties of apple trees for cooler climate. We are moving to the Scottish Border next week and would like to plant about 6 apple trees. Would like both cooker and dessert apple. Please advise if you have the knowledge suitable for these growing conditions.
What are the growing conditions there ? Our members are worldwide so I am sure someone will be familiar with the climate. Here in the US,,most all apple varieties do well in cooler states.
One piece of information you may wish to think about is the chill hour requirement for the apple varieties you are considering. Most apples need between 400 and 1000 and more chill hours. The more info you have the better informed your decision will be. Jerry
I don't think antartica has a USDA map, but everywhere else does. So a very little bit of a search on your part should secure you at least your hardiness zone. I expect you are (without looking) zone 5-A. And are likely well placed where there is enough top-soil to grow apples. The East Malling research center was a pioneer facility to select rootstock for apple production. I bet your local gardening club could steer you right to a local nursery.
In terms of latitude you ewill be a bit higher than us here across the channel, but we have an apple sort called the "Schellinkhouter". Malus domestica 'Schellinkhouter'. It works for us in our cold and wet climate. Good luck with it, should you decide to try it........this message will destruct in five seconds.
