My mother and I share a similar trait. We become attached to old notes/documents/other useless things and find them hard to throw out. Pretty much everyone else in my family has no problem with this, but my Mom and I have a sentimental streak. Because I am away from my parent's home I even have my mother vicariously hoarding documents/old things for me she finds until I get back. Even travelling presents me with a new batch of things that have sentimental value. Obviously while travelling I can't take everything with me, so I don't look forward to throwing them in the bin. Anyone else do this?
Yes! I need a larger house. All the notes, receipts, brochures, folders and whatnots are building up week by week. Don't quite know what to do with it all, so I guess that one of these days I'll actually manage to throw it in the bin.
I like to think of myself as sentimental. When I think about the term 'hoarding' I think about the show HOARDERS and I'm definitely NOT like that! I do keep a lot of things that have sentimental value, but I like them put away somewhere special TIDY.
I can't afford to be a hoarder because Mark is and he could fill our house brim full in a matter of days. Books are his speciality. He loves to read, so buys books from charity shops and second hand shops, reads them, then stacks them up in our study. I suggest he take them back to the charity shop to recycle them, but alas they just pile up around my ears. Tools....paperwork....bits and bobs that 'just might come in handy one day'.... you get the idea. Problem is, he has created a similar monster in our James who can't stand to part with anything. Even baby toys he keeps! I have to do some sneaky clean ups as you can imagine.
Oh, gee, Frank, you just HAD to ask, didn't you? Yes, I hoard. I have more one-gallon pots than I can ever use; any flat stick that comes from the workshop goes into my "marker for garden rows" stash; books, don't get me started--I'm a retired librarian who has been a book-a-holic all her life so we have books everywhere; any plastic container that can be used to contain frozen produce/meat/whatever is saved and has its place in the pantry until needed. Rags--lordy, I could outfit a whole village if they were willing to wear glad rags! I really must get around to doing my fall cleaning and dispose of some of my hoardings (or at least re-arrange them).
I fall into that category. One of my "specialties" is knick-knacks... guess I inherited that from my Mom. I have little souvenirs stacked to the brim... stuff from my high schools days even. I get so attached to them. But now that I'm in the process of moving... I realize that I just have to get rid of some stuff. I found things that have been stored away for over 10 years. I'd forgotten all about them. Then there's the boxes of old record albums. And video tapes. And let's not forget all the Harley Davidson stuff I accumulated (back in my "biker" days). With having to combine all of my stuff with all my Mom's... I foresee a yard sale this spring.
EJ, there's comfort for me in your tale. My darling husband is just the same, and both girls too. The youngest is the worst. She probably takes after the both of us.
We do tend to collect books and movies (VHS and DVD) Some we re-read and some just sit on the shelves because you can't find them anymore. I am a hoarder when it comes to things I could, maybe, possibly, probably, someday use in the garden...or things I just think I could maybe, possibly...etc. Randy's motto is 'keep it, you never know when you are going to need it someday' His home workroom/office and youngest daughter's bedroom are off limits to me and they have been known to go thru the bags going to Goodwill or our favorite thrift shop, to make sure none of their stuff has been impounded. But as long as they keep it all in their own areas it is safe.
I've got things from when the boys were small and when they were in school. I've been going through things and every once in awhile I send them the stuff from their childhood. Just recently I went through my picture box and sent members of the family pictures taken of them over the years. dooley
