I figured I might as well post this to go along with our fallen tree post. The tree fell on Sat. as I had said. So on Sunday afternoon after we came home from church and stopping for a yummy lunch. I thought we would get a start on cutting off some of the smaller tree branch's a hauling them away. My hubby said sounds great to me. I'll get my chainsaw. Ok I said as I headed out there with my cutting loppers to start on a few of the smaller branch's.
Honey started up the saw and didn't check which branch's were holding up the trunk of the tree that was still partially attached to the rest of the tree trunk. I was around the other side of the tree and heard the chainsaw errrrrrring it's way through and then nothing. Hummm.
I asked what had happened and my hubby said that the blade was pinched in the tree limb. Me thinking little tree limb walked around to see.
I said to him are you crazy, nuts, don't have all your screws tightened. That is one of the main branch's that is holding up the broken off tree trunk that is still attached to the tree stump. If you would have cut through it the tree could have flipped around, come crashing down and pinned you under the tree. Perish the thought.

Tree stump is about 15th tall. ( photo / image / picture from Tooty2shoes's Garden )

In the above photo you can see where the tree limbs fork off from one another. Both forks where holding up the broken off tree trunk. Which was still partially attached to the 15ft tree stump. He started cutting on the back fork.
I couldn't not believe my eye's. I asked if he had a death wish. He of course said no, and that he should have checked first where the weight of the tree was being supported. Oh Really I said! He said that I should just go and do what ever I was doing. I was hopping mad. As we now had to free his saw before we could get any of the bigger stuff cut up. I said I now know why he doesn't have very many power tools. After about 30 mins. of hacking, and sawing with a hand saw. Nothing! It was still stuck. :-x So I held the saw while he went and got his car jack. By then 40 min. had passed. After a few tries we got the saw out. He said that he was going down to the barn and tighten the chain. OK, I said.
So I continued to cut off some of the smaller stuff with my pruning shears. As I was loading some of it on the cart I heard a small crunching sound and saw the tree move slightly. The place where we had cut into the limb to get his chainsaw unstuck from had been weaken enough that it broke under the weight of the tree trunk. Oh Boy I was so glad we were not under the tree when that happened. But God it did not come down from where it is still partially attached.
I love him dearly. But some day's I really do wonder about if his little grey cells are working or not working. Oh yes, I am the one who has all the power tools.
    ;)

Good grief you two were lucky!! I hate to think what would have happened if either of you had been trapped underneath that fallen tree. I think you should keep your hubby and the power tools well apart somehow.

Eileen I agree with you. At the time I was so mad that if the tree had fallen on him I just might have stood there and said; I TOLD YOU SO! Then ran and called 911 and got the neighbors to help. :stew1:

We have learned the hard way. Have burned wood for 40 years. All way nice to small cut under first. To take tension off.
But glad no one was hurt.

Philip I to am glad it was only a Oops.

Kostza You are so right. This is the same guy that was burning the dead grass in our pasture this last spring. He came in and told me that while he was out there he noticed his one foot seemed be getting hot. Really Hot! He looked down only to see that he had started his leather boot on fire. He is even not safe with match's. ;)
