Some deer got into my garden the other night and created some havoc. They took a few bites out of my Hens & Chicks and on top of that, completely pulled it out of it's pot. They ate down my tree saplings of which I had no idea what it was, but the parent tree looked nice. The seeds I grew them from I acquired in Savannah, GA...4 hours from here. They also stepped on some other seeds I had planted and waiting to sprout. :( Dang deer!!!

I understand totally, I live on a golf course and it is also a wildlife sanctuary...we are over run with deer..I try to find only plants that the deer do not particularly care for but there are times when I see something I like, ie.. roses, and I have to put out stuff to keep them away...I have a fence around my roses and in the bed up front I spray the plants with hot peppers and I sprinkle old fashioned moth balls all over the place......it does seem to do the trick. :stew1:

Hey, thanks for the info. I think I will try the hot peppers and the moth balls. Not a big fence fan, but one will go up if it keeps up after these treatments. How do you use the moth balls? Do you put them directly under the plants?

Wow, FF, that would bum me out. No deer in my neighborhood. I hope the measures work out for you.

yeah buy the moth balls at any store, I buy mine at the dollar store, make sure you buy the whole not the crushed...and just spread them where you don't want deer, rabbits, armadillos etc to go and it keeps them out for my garden! :stew1:

Daisybeans - Yea, I was pretty upset. I have never had a problem with them before, but this year they seemed to have found something they like in my garden.

Delly - Thanks, I'm definitely going to try that.

I've also had luck using soap and bloodmeal Jon. Bloodmeal needs to be re-applied after rain. I had soap hanging on the tomatoe cages and they lasted all season.

Do the mothballs and hot peppers work on squirrels and crows :?: (Can't use the blood meal because the racoons and possums love it). The squirrels and crows are destroying my planters this year. They keep digging in them. It is really annoying to have to keep replanting the plants and filling in the holes. :(

What type of hot pepper do you use and does it burn the plants?
