I had someone swap me armenian cukes this spring so I grew them. I am not thinking I will grow them again due to their lack of flavor. Is this normal or do I need to try a new seed source? Here is the first one I picked... ( photo / image / picture from carolyn keiper's Garden ) and here is Adrian modeling it for me... ( photo / image / picture from carolyn keiper's Garden )
I've never grown Armenians, but I did get one from a farmers' market last summer. Like you, I didn't think it had much flavor, and it also lacked the "refreshing" quality I have grown to expect in cucumbers. Adrian is a handsome guy--if you ever put him up for adoption, I'm first in line! I need someone who can operate heavy equipment and model in his spare time.
Oh, thank you Jane, but he's a keeper. IF and that is a BIG if I ever think I need to give him up you will be at the top of my list. :-D Thanks for the opinion, too.
Well, Mart, that makes 3 of us whom are not impressed with the flavor. I wish I would have asked before I wasted the time and space planting them. Next time I try some novelty I will ask you all first :-D. i appreciate your unbiased opinions on the taste and worth of growing new varieties in the garden...speaking of which I will go back to the tomato berry thread and comment on that...Thanks!
hey ! since you have them already,, try a relish with them. add hot pepper and onions, vinegar and sugar ect. might be good for hot dogs and such. kind of like making zuchinni relish. love that with peas and cornbread.
Mart, is this a raw relish or a cooked relish. I make a cooked one out of red peppers and onion, with mustard seed, sugar and vinegar and then I canned it. Do you cook the cukes and they retain their crunchiness? Thanks.
never tried it out of the armenian cukes, but any recipe for zuchinni relish would work, i would salt them to firm up and just follow the recipe. i normally cook all my relishes a short time.
Thanks Mart. I was out picking the patch the yesterday and they were looking so bad I pulled them. We are getting cool damp nights now and than and it is hard on the cukes and tomatoes .
Not my favorite. Planted them once and that was it. Are they even a real cucumber? To me they tasted more like a melon that didn't sweeten up.
