Everyone knows herbs play a big roll in culinary master pieces. But does anyone ever plant them primarily for their aromas? Certain aromas can set the mood and feal of a garden or garden area. I'm making a list of herbs I want to plant in areas of the non edible garden to add to the pleasure of the garden. I may have left out some. Always open for suggestions.
I voted for Rosemary, but would have also voted for Basil and Mint if more than one vote was possible. But my absolute favorite is Patchouli...Lavender is a close second....so I guess that puts Rosemary actually 3rd.
they're all good. In different areas of the garden different herbs set the scene and mood. So with certain planting color arrangments, shapes, and styles different aromas represent the feal of the garden better than others.
Like Toni, I'd cast another vote if possible. Lemon balm is pretty, and its "cool" scent is appreciated here in hot Texas.
Oh yeah, I forgot about lemon balm :-o I got my first pot of it this summer! don't forget Lavender!! :-D
I voted for sage...although creeping thyme is a fav as well as lavender. I didn't know patchouli was an actual herb! I thought it was just a mix of different hippie scents. I'm looking into how to grow it now! (no "peace" smiley...bummer) LOL
Lavender is my favorite. My second choice is Rose [ Rosa spp ]. I adore peppermint and lemon balm. I'm very fond of rosemary as well. Lemon basil and lemon thyme for a wonderful potpourri. I always save the stems of all my favorites, and dry them for use in potpourri. I add dried herb leaves, including stems and dried flowers. Sage flowers are so fragrant, I add them to the mix. Along with dried lemon peel, orange peel, whole nutmeg, cloves, cinnamon bark. I have a glass bowl with a cover. During the summer I layer the leaves, spices, stems, dried roses. By the end of summer, I have created a wonderful aroma therapy mix for myself and a few friends. The fragrance will last all winter, perfume the air, and give your spirits a lift.
I love the smell of all the herbs listed above... each have their own special quality... A few other favorites are thyme, lavender, fennel, the Mexican herb epazote...
