I purchased a mixed pack of Asiatic Lily bulbs back in June, which is our first winter month here. Most of the bulbs grew and they have started blooming. I love the colours in this 'Matisse Collection' of Asiatic Lilies. The colours are vibrant and rich. Pretty. If you see little "bulbs" (called bulblets or bulbils) developing at each leave axis, you can harvest them at the end of the growing season and plant them in a nursery bed and they will eventually grow into a mature bulb. then you'll have a whole bed of identical to the parent plants collection.
Thank you to Sherry, Cuatro-gatos, Stratsmom, Cherylad, Lukeypukey and Carolyn for your comments. Carolyn, thank so much for that information. I will look for those bulblets.
I really like that last one, such a dark gorgeous color. I think I like Asiatic Lilies more than Daylilies...their colors are just so intense. I have white, pink, yellow and orange that bloom for way too short a time in early Spring and I want more.
Very pretty ones! I may disappoint you, but I've never seen bulbils on leaves with this kind of lilies. There's just one type of lily with bulbils: (If you squint your eyes you can actually see the bulbils)
Hi, Bernieh those asiatics are so pretty and fuss free to grow, I have some but mine are all pink ones, they come true to mother plant every year. Carolyn.... Calinromania is correct, no bulblets in the axis of these pretty ones, they are at ground level, they can be harvested or left to grow on themselves, I actually thin mine out because space is at a premium at this place, mainly because I want grow everything! In one of these photos you can see the bulblets at ground level, after the flowers die down the bulblets show up. asiatic bulblets ( photo / image / picture from chocolate's Garden ) ( photo / image / picture from chocolate's Garden )
Toni, I've only just started growing both Daylilies and the Asiatics and Oriental Lilies in the last two years. I've found them all to be just brilliant, although I do love the colours of the Asiatics, the perfume of the Orientals and the showiness of the Hemerocallis. I think I'm smitten!! Calinromania, I squinted really really hard but couldn't quite see them. Then again maybe my glasses aren't the best! Chocolate, you are so right when you say fuss-free to grow. Thanks for the info. Now I know why I had so many new plants popping up in last year's pot of Asiatics. The ones that were planted in a garden bed were swamped during our heavy wet season here so they were literally swept away. Love your pink Asiatic! I can see the new Orientals just starting to open up tonight, so I'm looking forward to the wonderful perfume as well as the blooms.
