Does anyone have a fruit producing avocado tree? If so, is the plant in the ground or in a container? I have a 5 foot avocado tree in a container and I'm just curious how long does it take to start producing fruit. The tree is about 2 years old...maybe 3.

    Thanks!

According to an A&M horticulturist, they do not grow true from seed and if they do bear fruit it could take as long as 10-15 years. I guess you will have a pretty tree but still be buying avacados at the grocery store for a while.

There are companies growing Avacados in Texas but they are grafted onto rootstock from Mexico. Those will usually produce fruit in 3-5 years.

I heard that they also grow in California where there is no frost. I have grown them in pots before, but never got any that big to bear fruit. I always have to find a home for them when they get too big, or let them die outside. :(
