Ornamental Pepper ( photo / image / picture from kathyd's Garden ) Yesterday, while purchasing groceries, I noticed their bargain plant shelf had this little gem of an ornamental pepper on sale for 99 cents. It looked pretty bad, but after a drink of water, it perked right up. I'm wondering what all of you garden stewbies consider your best find ever.
thats a really good find. mine would have to be my canna which i paid 3 pound for from a store near to my work. bargain! missed out on a really cheap hydrangea too. went back and it had gone doh!!
For years, at work, I was the plant person. People would occasionally ask questions and every once and awhile a sick or dying plant would be given to me or be there by my office door as I arrived in the morning. These are 'new found friends' nursed back to health and now years later they still brighten windows and corners of our house. It is hard to pick a favorite out of so many, each has their own story. I found(and bought all) 3 cut leaf Japanese Maples in 1 gal pots for $7.00 each. They are getting beautiful now.
I once got a huge mimosa tree for $18, and a Franklinia alatamaha for less than that. It flowered a few weeks ago. We were so happy about that I went back to get another one but it wasn't so cheep the second time. Barb in Pa.
I dug an orchid that was about done flowering out of a trash can at work. It still looks healthy, just a bare stem is all. And the annuals vendor was going to toss out a Pothos that had a badly cracked pot, and I asked if she would sell it to me for cheap. She said she didnt have any markdowns SKU's. Then she looked around and told me to stick it in a bag and not let her boss see it xD
This isn't a house plant but I bought it off the close out rack for 50 cents :-D I don't remember if it was last summer or the summer before but I love it!! When it blooms it has little, yellow, bell shaped flowers. It is doing AMAZING in this old wine barrel! Stratsmom, I have that lamium. It will naturalize and grow in shady spots as well as in a bit of sunshine. I love it. The flowers are beautiful in the spring and the foliage is attractive too. Also, the yellow flowers press very well.

Wow folks, those are some good bargains! I have to say my best bargains are like Jerry, all the plants I have adopted as freebies from my work. So many to name, but I get customers that think plants are dying, or they don't like the looks of them, and I remove them and bring them home for some TLC, and they usually flourish in my Birchwood gardens.
Just got home from scrounging through the garden center at Lowe's and I have 6 new Hosta's for $1.87 each. 4 'Orange Marmalade' and the last two 'First Frost' 6 Hostas for $1.87 each ( photo / image / picture from toni's Garden )
My best buy was a Mahonia that cost me the vast sum of 75p. :-D It was in a sorry state when I got it and I didn't think it would survive. However it did and I had it in the garden for around five years before the -20C temperatures killed it off last winter.
Bought the boston fern for a buck at Lowe's on the discount rack the CHLORPHYTUM AMANIENSE - Mandarin Plant for a couple of bucks and the hoya cutting was from a trade.
