Yes, you need to thin or transplant. You can leave several in the pots and keep them pinched to keep them bushy. An 8" pot or larger, if you have one, should do ok for them.

Oh, my, yes, you need to thin and transplant! Pick out the smallest ones, then carefully lift and transplant the larger ones. I use a one-gallon pot per plant. The pot they are in now looks bigger than that, so it would support two plants, but not right next to each other.
Your basil looks lovely, and with enough room to spread roots those plants will provide you with a whole lot of basil (start collecting recipes now :) ).

Beautiful basil. Gorgeous color. I'm sure it grew and produced very well for you. Here's a recipe for Shrimp Marinade using fresh basil.

    3 cloves of garlic
    1/3 cup olive oil
1/4 cup tomato sauce or you can use cocktail sauce
    2 tablespoons red wine vinegar
    3 tablespoons chopped fresh basil
    1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
    1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
2 pounds of fresh shrimp, peeled and deveined

In a large glass, stir together the garlic, olive oil, tomato sauce, cayenne pepper. Add the rest of the seasonings, and mix well. Add the shrimp and stir until evenly coated. Cover and refrigerate for about an hour. Discard the marinade before grilling or broiling. Grill or broil the shrimp about 2 or 3 minutes on each side.
