I have lost count of the times the roses have made me bleed and the 'where the heck did that bruise come from' moments over the years.

Oh, one thing you should do before getting much further into gardening, make sure your Tetanus vaccination is up to date, just to be on the safe side.

    Ow. :(

Just last week I was pruning my rose bushes and I managed to grab a stem just exactly the right way (or wrong way, depending on your perspective) and drove an extra hefty thorn straight through my glove and into the fleshy part of my thumb.

It doesn't sound like much, but if you've ever been bitten by a rose bush thorn, you know how much it stings. I swear the tips are poisoned!

Ouch ! I've never had rose bushes but I do know how much they hurt! My tetanus is up to date. I stepped on a rusty roofing nail a year ago and had to get one! The worst part is that I didn't even hit it that hard I just hit it perfect! I couldn't even breath on it without it causing me pain and my fiance was telling me I was just being over dramatic then twork days later this bruise came in and he felt so bad.

Nicole, we should have warned you about the dangers of gardening. Poison Ivy, thorns, sand burrs, fire ants, Rue rash, and yellow jackets are just a few of the interesting things can can turn you blue, red, or both!
Keep your tetanus up-to-date, get some Gold Bond cream for rashes (or any other brand that will keep the red bumps from appearing), and tell your boyfriend that you are a tough lady, but would appreciate a little more sympathy :sete_046:!

Eww, I hope you feel better soon. I have Arnica I keep in the med cabinet just for bruises. It works wonderfully if you put it on as soon as it happens or as quick as you can. It is over the counter and at most any pharmacy.

we all seem to get battle wounds out in the garden... Man! how did that happen moments abound here. I found a blood blister next to my thumb nail today... Man! that hurts and btw... how did that happen? I sure don't remember pinching it. Unless it happened when it was really cold this morning and I was on the ladder up at the peak of the roof nailing fascia back on that the wind pulled off??? I bet that is what happened. it was too cold to feel it when I hit it with the hammer. duh! My dear husband had a big red hard spot on his leg that other day and asked me to look at it. It had a black center... I thought good grief! so I got a needle and picked at it (this is on the side of his leg) And I happened to dig out a long skinny splinter/thorn- something. It was 1/2" long. I was so grossed out. I have never seen an object that long in anyone. He had a lot of grimaces going on as I was doing it. I felt bad but it had to come out, I just wasn't expecting it to be so long. I have no idea how he got something so long impaled in his leg and didn't notice it until it was inflamed.

    That's a good'un.
It looks quite stoer and gives you show-off rights.
You can, in all, good conscience show this bruise and have bragging rights to claim your rightful place in the ranks of true gardeners.
    Welcome to the ranks, Celeste.

This is for when you become more 'seasoned' young lady. If you get up in the morning and something doesn't hurt, check the newspaper for your obituary.

Actually Ronnie, I slept in today. (Had a lie in for our English friends) Wasn't until the Jack Russell Terrier landed on my chest that I woke up around 8:00 am. Seriously, if I didn't hurt somewhere, I'd think I was dead. Getting old ain't for the weak or timid!

Ah man, I hear that!! I hurt in places where I didn't even know I HAD places! Still, I'm very grateful that once I get moving, I don't hurt any more. (arthritis, according to my doc) So the trick is to just keep moving, right? ;)

Remember that old French Foreign Legion movie, March or Die? In our case, it is more like move or die (figuratively speaking of course).

I was told I had "incipient arthritis" in one hip. I asked the doctor if the slight limp might be from stepping down from a ladder before the ladder ended (missed the last step and ended up on my keester). He agreed that was likely the cause.
When I wake up I do a mental check of my body, and if it's still there, aching or not, I'm ready for the day!

That is one heck of a bruise, Nicole! I do believe gardening requires you to pay with bruises, thorns, and "how did I get that cut! I've found that 'What don't hurt, don't work" , at least with me now days.
