I took these pictures near Palm Springs, so it must like the heat, but I have no idea what it is and hope that someone does. ( photo / image / picture from charlenebrown's Garden ) ( photo / image / picture from charlenebrown's Garden )
I would guess it to be some sort of Amaranthus Charlene. It reminds me a bit of my Love-Lies-Bleeding.
Thank you Netty - I really appreciate your input - I guess that could be but it seems as if my plant has the multi-clored leaves and the stalk is red/pink too and the flowers don't hang down like the Love-Lies-Bleeding.
Thanks Netty and Cheryl. In looking on-line at the plant you suggested, I still see many differences. I note that the plant in question has red/pink and green leaves in addition to the stem/stock being pink/red too, not just the flowers/plumes. Do you still think that Celosia is correct, because if so, I'll continue to try to find this plant at my local nursery. Thanks again for taking the time to respond
I'd still go with a type of Celosia. With the one's that I have, the stems and leaves don't start to add red until they start to bloom. Celosia cristata (Cockscomb, Plumed Celosia) http://www.gardenstew.com/plantstew/20779
Celosia and Amaranth are both in the Amaranthaceae Family of plants so there are similarities between the two Genera. There are 7 Species of Celosia and 60 recognized Species of Amaranth.....so somewhere in all of that I believe you will find your plant. I haven't found a photo of Celosia that matches yours so I am leaning towards an Amaranth too. In the Amaranthus Genus, the shape, size and color of the leaves depends on which Species it is. Some leaves are red, green or even purple. If you don't find an exact species ID it could be a cross between two other species too.
