We've had some nice spring weather the last couple of days. Because we still have storm windows up or down as the case may be I opened the back door for letting some of the warm fresh air into the house. Guess what else came into the house? We were trying to eat lunch and the bees were buzzing our plates. I tried to shoo them away so we could eat but when it got to be too many I got a can with a plastic lid and started to catch them and empty them back outside. Of course, you know that they made it back inside before I did. We had to close the door. Then, I could catch the bees and empty them back outside. I caught six right away and one or two were still buzzing around last night. I'm glad they are able to be caught and taken outside because I refuse to swat them. With the shortage of bees lately that is not an option. When we sit outside they are buzzing around. I know it's warm but there is nothing blooming for them to eat. Maybe I should fill the hummingbird feeders with some sugar water. There are no hummingbirds yet but the bees might stay out of the house. What do you think? dooley
Sugar water should keep them occupied and out of the house. I put out cut up apple and orange during the winter for the birds who don't eat seeds or suet and what is left out there is keeping the bees happy this morning.
We feed our bees during the winter on sugar water in a feeder made for that purpose. Bee sugar water should be a 1 to 1 ratio, and put it in a very, very shallow dish (bees can't swim). Even better, just put some white cane sugar in a shallow bowl and let the bees have at it! Bees should never be given corn syrup, brown sugar, or turbinado sugar. Molasses is a no-no, also.
Laura I know they are a pain but like you said we sure didn't have enough last year.Maybe thats a good sigh for your this years veggies.Joe and I hope to be able to have some flowers and a few veggies.
