We have had another summer resident bird return to our feeders. Jokingly we call them Bicycle Helmet birds. But they really are White-throated Sparrows. It is fun seeing what species return every week.
I can see why you've given him that nickname Tooty. He's far and above more handsome than the sparrows we have here.
Yup he is a cute fellow. Only the males have the yellow spots above their eyes. I wish I could trap and send you some of the House Sparrows we have here in the States. They are the number one reason our Blue Birds where in decline. Maybe we here in the State should start a repatriation for House Sparrows back to Scotland, and ship you a few thousand.
That is a gorgeous bird, 2T. The markings on its head are special and I suppose what immediately identifies the species. Great foto, miss.
Thank you SJ. We also have another Sparrow that looks really similar to the White throated. It is the White Crowned Sparrow. So I usually check for the white throat so I know which sparrow I am seeing.
Thank You SJ- We have quite a few other sparrows that nest here in the summer. Here are a few pictures of them. The first one is of the Chipping Sparrow. Smallest of our Sparrows. The next pic is of our Fox Sparrow, and the last one is of the Song Sparrow.
Sj it certainly is. So glad they share our yard. Now I'm on Warbler watch for the Month of May. Such fun.
Very attractive Sparrows compared to ours,..i can well see why that Fox Sparrow is so named,..definitely Foxy color.
SJ- I did a google search to see how many different warblers we have in Wisconsin. 42 different species of what are called Wood Warblers. Boy oh boy, I have got my work cut out for me if I want to see that many warblers. Last year we had quite a few Yellow-rumped Warblers at our feeders. Non so far this year. I have seen on our property and down by the river behind us only 8 different warblers. They are the Oven Bird, Wilsons warbler, Canadian warbler, Chestnut sided warbler, Yellow Throat warbler, Myrtle warbler, Black Throated Green warbler, and the Yellow warbler. The Kirklands warbler is making a slow come back. As many of it's nest are visited by the Brown Headed Cow bird which lays it's egg in the nest. The Cow bird young hatch first, and push all the other baby birds or eggs out of the nest. I hate those birds and always have my 22 rifle at hand. But I think I will look into making a trap for them instead. The DNR gets rid of them that way. Such fun. Philip-- Thank you. The only one I hate is the English Sparrow. Bad news for our Blue Birds. I will have to do a google search to see how many different warblers are in your area.
Wow--that is some warbler-spotting! Chapeau. I hope that you will see even more this year. Go for it, meid.
