While mowing yesterday I saw this BIG bug sitting on the rim of a pot. It was about 1 1/4" long and wasn't moving. My husband took a few photos, and looked it up--it's a Mydas Fly. The good: it preys on other flies and the larva preys on June beetle larvae. The bad: it also preys on bees the ugly: yes, it certainly is!
You're right Jane it is ugly!! I just hope it doesn't find many bees to prey on and restricts itself to other harmful insects.
Yep, that is one ugly bug! Maybe he will only prey on the harmful insects and leave the bees alone. Maybe if you put him where the bad bugs are he will take care of them first before he decides to do any chomping on your other plants.
Good foto of this unusual beast. It is good to learn about this predator. You'd better watch out it may carry you off!
