The "big" nursery here has had their 50% off sale going on for a while. I really think they jack up the prices and then mark them down to what I think is "normal". So I don't even bother stopping in. That is until they start their 70% off sale! I got some Bachelor Buttons, Ice Plants, Zinnias, Coneflowers and a Pride of Barbados for under $28. Looking at my receipt, I got charged for an extra plant. But at $1.20 it's not worth the effort to contest it. 70% off sale ( photo / image / picture from cherylad's Garden ) And while going through the photos, I found one of Knothead (the squirrel we rescued last year). He still comes to "his" tree looking for peanuts. Knothead ( photo / image / picture from cherylad's Garden )
Cheryl, you are one plant-shoppin' girl! Wonderful buys, and those aren't itty-bitty plants either. Let us see where you plant them--your gardens are amazing .
Good deals! I am due to find a good plant sale soon ... I need a few shrubs for a new section of my garden
You're a girl after my own heart Cheryl. I would wait for the 70% off sale too especially if I could pick up great looking plants like yours. It's wonderful to see that Knothead is still doing well and enjoying his peanuts.
Thanks everyone. Hubby's sister wanted to replace her Pride of Barbados. I gave her a small one recently, but when I saw these big ones, I gave her a call to see if she wanted me to pick one up for her. She did. So I stopped by yesterday and got her's. With all the damage to the pecans trees by worms this year, I don't think we're going to have much of a crop. So, looks like I'll have to continue putting out peanuts for ol' Knothead.
Ah yes. I love end of the season sales. You got some good ones there. We picked up three plant protecting tents. One bigger one and two smaller ones. Oh poo. I should have taken pictures of them. We have had the robins trying to eat our tomatoes once they start getting red. They poke several holes in them and then they start to rot in those places. Unreal. Never had that happen before. Gardening is so exciting. Oh well. To bad about your pecan trees. Funny about your raising knot head the squirrel. When I was a kid we raised a squirrel also. We named her poppy because we had her in a Poppy Cock can until she out grew it. It was a carmel corn snack we use to buy. She was a hoot in the house. You would give her a peanut and she would go and bury it in the corners of any chair in the living room. We where always finding her buried treasures.
I find it very hard to pass by a plant sale...about the only time I do is if I am with my husband. I will wait and go back later. He never says anything about what I buy, maybe I just feel guilty doing it because I have so many already. I think it might be because I like to take my time shopping and checking over the plants carefully so I don't bring home some unwanted bugs to the garden. One time I brought something home and when I went to plant them, the roots were full of moving things...back it went after I put it in a bag...not worms, but maybe earwigs...I didn't really want to dig it apart to check it all out. Great sale you found and I usually don't drive back to a place either with the price of gas so high unless it is close-by.
Fantastic buys. I love the end of the year clearance sales though I don't often get to them. There's no nurseries in my small town and the nearest 2 are 60 miles away. I had some business to do in the 'big' town and managed to get to the nursery and picked up a Spartan Juniper, ribbon grass, and bergenia 'winter glow'.
