I have no idea why they bother, but they are now naming winter storms. The winter of 84/85 we had big snowstorms every few days, & most of it did not melt off before the next storm. They would have had to go through the alphabet more than once that winter. It was a lovely winter. Allegedly this was to be a good sized storm and bring us 6 to 9 inches of snow. Humph. It was a dud here. We had a bit of wind and about 1/2 inch of flurries here. The state wasted good salt on the roads, I guess because people around here are clueless as to driving in the snow. Apparently other areas had a bit more snow and some ice, and the south got a few tornadoes? Did you all get much out of this alleged super storm?
If this is the storm that missed you http://www.wfaa.com/news/184782671.html sounds like you were lucky. And a few thousand in our area were without power all Christmas day. There were planes stuck on the tarmac for many hours at DFW international because of icy conditions.....many people were not amused. Two Tornadoes hit small Texas towns on Christmas day killing one young man.
I would not wish tornadoes on anyone... Hopefully, everyone's power is back on by now. I have had to do without numerous times, and it is not good after a few days of it. I guess we are too spoiled on having electricity. If the planes stay on the ground until the ice is cleared, they should be safe. Late, but safe. We had some winds, but nothing I would call major. We had high winds a few days ago, with 55 mph winds that did some minor damages and brought down some dead branches I could not have reached, so it was a help. When Hurricane Ike came through a few years ago, we had 90 mph winds and lots of damages from that.
When the planes are stuck on the tarmac the people are safe but because they shut down the power there is usually no air movement, the toilets don't work and there is no food other than bags of nuts or granola bars on most planes anymore...so 4-7 hours gets to be more than most people can handle. American Airlines appears to have violated federal law last night, they are not supposed to keep people on the plane longer than 3 hours anymore but there were some on for 7+ hours yesterday.
I would think the no food thing would be illegal for people with medical problems such as diabetes? I would have to carry food with me, because most granola bars have soy milk in and I am allergic to soy. I cant chew the nuts any more. It is a shame they have some of these stupid rules nowadays. I don't think "Homeland Security" is very good, and is more of a misnomer at best.
We are to get more snow Friday. But nothing like last thursday. Dh got customer generator ready just in case lights go out. Her Long private steep drive was slick today.Glad got 4x4 .She had to stay at her job for 2 days. DR at a prison.
We are up to about 6" now. We will see if there is significant fall overnight, but I think it is about over now. Which is fine with me! 14" of snow is a little too much for my wants, but I guess it is what it is. I am just glad we are the ones with the snow plows.
