Hi all. I am a newbie with ????. Birds are eating my zinnia seeds. I don't mind sharing but they are eating more then their fare share. Is this a sign that seeds are ripe enough to harvest. Also is there anyone in Va. Williamsburg, Va. beach, Richmond area etc. that grow Angels Trumpet? Thanks for listening, Donna
Hi and welcome. I moved this topic to another forum so don't forget to post a introduction in the Welcome to GardenStew forum so the introductions can begin Take small paper bags and tie them over the seed heads you want to save. The birds get some and the seeds can finish drying so you get to replant for next year. Plus birds are not the neatest eaters around so many of the seeds they pluck off the flower will land on the ground and germinate too.
I agree with Toni on some seeds will be dropped and you will have some new ones growing. The yellow finches do that with my Liatris...I find all types of plants spread out in the flower beds and I know I didn't plant them. :-D
Hi Toni, Looked for small bags and could not find any. So I took pantyhose and cut the legs, about 3 1/2" long and stapled one end together. If it works I will be able to use them over & over. Thanks for your suggestion. Donna
Great idea Donna. Anything that catches the seeds if they fall and the hose will allow air flow to the flower to help the seeds dry naturally.
I hope these birds know where your garden is. They might be placing dropping these seeds on the next block. Just wrap them up.
volunteers Birds can have all they want and drop anywhere. Love those volunteers, saves me money and work.
