I have an oro blanco bought from Home Depot years ago. It already bear fruits for four seasons but the fruits has been bitter since. I thought as it gets older the fruit taste will change. It is sweet like any other oro blanco except it is bitter. Any body knows what is happening? Thank you in advance.
Wish I could help you, but I have never even heard of this fruit. Please feel free to enlighten me/us as to what this is. Does the ph effect the taste of the fruit? or it could just be the cultivar you have. Not every plant bears an identical fruit unless it is propagated from one original plant. My GUESS is that there are many cultivars.
Oro Blanco results from a google search, is supposed to be a sweet grapefruit. I'm wondering if what you have matches that descriptor.
The fruit is really sweet the reason why I bought it, but also bitter and that bitterness lingers in your mouth.Home Depot does not sell fruit trees from seeds, they are all grafted so it should be the same as the tree from where it came from. Oro Blanco is like Pomelo except is not oblong but a little bit flat. The meat is the same as pomelo except it is really white the reason why it is called oro blanco (white gold). Some pomelo's meat are pinkies. I wonder if it is the soil. Thanks anyway to Carolyn and Coppice. I HOPE SOMEBODY CAN HELP ME OTHERWISE I WILL HAVE TO USE THE SPACE FOR ANOTHER FRUIT TREE.
Rolfast, I beleive you, that you know the cultivar you desire. I undrerstand that most modern trees are grafted to ensure trueness-to-type. Sometimes the top-wood dies and the rootstock is whats left living. Other than seeking a second opinion from a local grower. My guess is a shovel-pruning may be in this trees future.
Sometimes drought conditions will cause a bitter taste. I bought FFA fruit one year from California and the grapefruit were so bitter we couldn`t eat them. They were like you said the flat ones rather that rounded fruits. Could this be the reason? Don`t know if your area had the same weather conditions that we have had.
I will try and check with some nursery regarding this problem. Maybe its a good idea to use the space for another fruit tree. Our weather here in California is similar to Texas. THANKS EVERYONE!
