Black Bamboo

    Anyone grow black bamboo....and positive or negative comments??
    Will it grow in zone 5b? Any Canadian members growing it?

    I honestly don't know what zones black bamboo will grow in but if it's any help I can grow it here in Scotland. Our temperatures can drop to -10 with wind chill and it survives well.

    I bought the clump forming black bamboo so it isn't invasive Gardeningguy. Apologies I meant to say -10C!! :-D

    Do you have a photo?? Do you know the actual name of it? How tall does it get?

    If I remember correctly it's called Phyllostachys Nigra and mine is around 5-6 foot high. It would be more invasive if it was kept in a warmer climate but it has never been a problem here. The stems turn black in the second or third year. :stew1:

    Juanmraz black bamboo is used here as a purely decorative grass for growing in gardens. It's stems offer a lovely contrast to the green of its leaves. :-D

    Yes....the black bamboo is a great addition to have in the garden as a conversation piece.
