I wish I could have got a good pic of this spider but it wouldn't climb up the white wall of the garage and the only pic I got isn't great and I don't have it on here but this is the first time I have seen one of these. It was next door at an abandoned for sale house I do yard work for. What makes it interesting is that I live west of the cascades and they are not suppose to be found on this side and it is really rare to find one so I thought that was cool. Most likely it hitched a ride with the guy that fixed up the house, he lives in Oregon and they are more common in Oregon all over the place though I haven't seen one there either but never really went looking. I found the photo of the spider, Enjoy Black Widow ( photo / image / picture from PillsburyDoughboy's Garden )
I don't know much about spiders. Are Black Widows good in the garden? Seems like I've heard they are poisonous.
I know some spiders are beneficial in gardens...They ear thebad bugs.. There are some really cool ones, that being said- I prefer that they stay away from me while I garden! I am scared of them... Snakes too! They give me the willies!
If you find even one Black Widow it's a good idea to kill it and possibly call an exterminator to make sure it didn't mate and they aren't egg sacks or babies all over. Like I said they are very uncommon here so I don't have to worry about that and I think I may have killed when it crawled into a hole and I was poking at to get it to come out. Anyhow, yes they are dangerous, all spiders are venomous, or poisonous as you put it, and the widow can kill a child or make an adult very ill and even possibly die. I'm a big man and I know they are docile otherwise I wouldn't have been playing with. Yes I was playing with it with a stick, I was trying to get a good picture of it, so yeah leave them alone. There are many others you should avoid as well such as the Hobo spider, Brown Recluse, funny a widow and a recluse, lol and a few others that aren't deadly but have nasty bites, if you have any questions just ask, I'm no expert but I know the common spiders of the states.
That's one spider I'd rather not see around here. There have been sightings in southern Sweden, but they're not common in Europe at all as far as I know. Norway has very few very poisonous critters. The viper is the worst we've got and won't kill anybody bar severe allergics.
It really depends on the Viper some can kill a full grown adult in one bite if you don't get medical attention.
