Are there any annual flowers that will bloom about five weeks from the date planted? My daughter teaches kindergarten and is looking for something that will bloom quickly. The seeds will be put into a mini-greenhouse. Thanks, TopCat
From looking at the seed packets I have, Zinnia's are the fastest to grow and bloom. They run 35-50 days to blooming, depending on the variety, amount of sunlight and water they get, then there is no guarantee that they will be blooming in 35 days. She could let the children plant the Marigold seeds then at the end of the 5 weeks, buy some Marigold at the nursery to show them how the buds are formed and open.
I'm with the other girls! Marigolds and zinnias were the first to come to mind Pumpkins or squash are good too. They won't bloom that soon but their big leaves are pretty impressive to the little ones! Deanna :-D
Actually, Zinnias and Margolds do bloom quickly but there are quicker blooming plants. If you are doing this for a kindergarten class I am assuming you do not need the plant to grow to be pot-full in the 5 weeks. Impatiens bloom while the plant is still very young. I'm sure each variety has a different germinating time so you may want to look that up. Begonias also bloom while young but they take 8-12 weeks to germinate.
Toni how do you always seem to have the right answer? And your solution to buy some marigolds if they didn't bloom, was very good. That way the kids will always remember what a marigold looks like (yeah right!!!)
