The first year in the ground it only put out one bud and it looked pretty. Last year some of the buds had brown before they even opened but with all the family stuff going on around here I just didn't have the time to think about it. This year there are several buds and the bush is very lush and green but these first two blooms have the brown edges to the petals. Anyone have a diagnoses and treatment information? Toni, some roses react badly to high humidity and their buds "ball" by turning brown. A mild case of balling shows up by crispy brown edges on petals, usually the outer petals. Or it could be botrytis (sp?) which is a fungal disease easily prevented/controlled by fungicides. I use a concoction of milk (dried, 2%, whole, whatever you have on hand) and water sprayed on the plant. For bad fungus infestations, a 50/50 solution, for prevention a 25% milk, 75% water works fine. Just make sure the solution is tepid. Mind you, I am not complaining after last year's drought, but let's face it, this spring has been a mite dampish and humid!
A couple of things, Were the rosebuds exposed to freezing temperatures? The next possibility are thrips. Treat affected plants with neem oil or horticultural oil. Jerry
