While out looking for that turtle we have in the backyard, we came across a baby blue jay, who'd fallen out of its nest. We could not find the nest in the pine tree, but the parents were hanging around. We called the wildlife rehab center & they said to bring the baby in, but when I suggested I just put the baby up in the tree in an empty coconut-husk hanging basket, they said that would be better. Better because the parents can raise the baby better than humans. My daughter drew a picture of the baby blue jay. We watched out the window & the parents were coming to the baby. When I first put it in the "nest" (filled with grass & leaves) it popped its head up & opened up, ready for a meal. I figured, that was a good sign. I hope it survives.
What a good idea that hanging basket nest is WT. So much better for the parents to raise their chick as it will have more chance of survival. Do let us know if it fledges won't you?
I have not checked the baby this morning, but Momma was in the tree tweeting at me as I watered underneath. I am reluctant to grab the ladder & look in for fear of freaking out the parents.
I'm glad the momma was tweeting at you instead of 'dive-bombing' at you for touching and moving her baby.Bluejays can be very mean! Sounds like she is greatful... hope the little one makes it.
I love Blue jays...thank you so much for helping it out...To let you really understand that I like them, I bought a 50 pound bag of peanuts for them...I shrink wrapped them in small packages...of course all of the crows and black birds enjoy them too.. Great picture..
What a cute bird! We have so many blue jays here but I've never seen a baby that small. Your daughter drew a very nice pic of him. Maybe she'll be an artist someday! Thanks for sharing.
She may very well become an artist, but has also mentioned the following professions: ballerina, paleontologist, entomologist & "betanarian" :-D - Oh, I forgot astronaut. She once opined, she could be a ballerina and an astronaut, because you have to be healthy for both of those!
