I got a container from a colleague. I am pretty sure the green plants in it are Sedums. But I am not sure what the purplish leaf plants are? Can someone help me identify? Thanks in advance.

Good catch. Looks like you might have the sedum, Autumn Joy. I have a heuchera similar to yours called marmalade, but there a lot of different varieties out there. I've found I have to pinch back the sedum pretty hard to keep it bushy and have a nice show in the fall. Mine get pretty lanky otherwise.

    Yup, definitely Sedum and Heuchera.

Yes, Heuchera and Coral Bells are the same. What a great gift! I think you will enjoy the autumn joy sedum. I started with a tiny plant and now three years later I have two big "bushes." I love how they change color in the Fall! Enjoy!

Thanks all. He had given this to me in a plastic bag -I think he dug it out of his garden. I put the clump of the Sedums and Heuchera in a container. Will it be ok? I want to have some containers this year and thought this was a good idea. Any suggestions on that?

Kind of an odd pair, IME. Sedum likes full nonstop sun, too much water will kill it. Heuchera prefers moist shade.

Does that mean I can't grow them in the same container?

Not at all, but I would expect one plant to do much better than the other, depending on conditions. Either the Heuchera will fry or the Sedum will flop, which is not necessarily a bad thing, just not a conventional goal. Wouldn't really bother me if it still made some flowers. I like the strange foliage. If I was to attempt this pair, I think I'd keep the Sedum in a separate pot, tucked into the larger pot, so I could water the Heuchera much more often while not getting the Sedum wet as often. Too much water will kill it.

Both are perennials if you have space(s) in the ground, one in mostly shade, one baking in the sun.

Neither really pack the "wow" power I like in a container plant, but that's purely a personal opinion about most perennials that don't bloom for a long enough period to be the kind of focal point I like for a pot.
