Hey, Can anyone tell me what these are on the plants? In one book it says it is because I am growing them to close together and another is telling to get rid of the plant and destroy it. My boyfriend thinks I should just leave it in. So don't know what to do, do I leave it in or get rid of it? It's only on 2 of the 4 plants. ( photo / image / picture from CariAnn88's Garden ) Chocolate spotting maybe? ( photo / image / picture from CariAnn88's Garden ) Bug???
The other 2 plants seem to be fine. Nothing wrong with them. Is there any way I can treat it? It is The Sutton.
Oh yes, they are called Fava Beans also. What do you do with them? Dry them on the vines or just cook them. Do you can them? Better yet, do you peal them??? They are one of my favorite beans.
The beans have not started to grow yet. Will the plant be okay or is there anything I can do to get rid of the bug?
I cannot see a bug clearly, or do you mean holes in the leaves? You could remove those leaves in case that is from some other cause. For the moment, I would leave the plants in place and watch them. BTW...are these broad beans outside or inside? What sort of watering schedule are you using? Keep us updated with this, oké?
I use Sergeants flea and tick spray and dilute it in a spray bottle, About one ounce flea spray, a squirt of dish soap and water to fill. Just spray the plant well and that should take care of the critters. I use this spray for all bugs. If you are organic,, use the cat flea and tick spray at the same rate but a little less water. You can buy larger amounts of the active ingredient but no sense doing that unless you have a large garden to take care of. Permethrin is in the dog flea spray and pyrethrin in in the cat spray. It is approved for organics. Both are very safe to use. You can find them at most dollar stores !! About $4.00 each and only takes an ounce or so.
I keep them out in my greenhouse. I think it might be because they are close together. But I do have holes in the leaves. I will remove them and keep an eye on them to see if anything else is happening.
cariann, do you see any shiny "trails" on the leaves before you water? The damage looks like slug damage to me, but the yellow leaf looks like a different issue, maybe too much water or too damp for too long. Do you have a fan in your greenhouse to circulate air? If not you might try putting one in there to do so. Pinch off the damaged and yellow leaves for now. Nothing will help them to recover.
I do not think any slugs can get into the greenhouse. My greenhouse is a greenhouse/raised bed. Greenhouse ( photo / image / picture from CariAnn88's Garden )
It is a very nice greenhouse, but don't underestimate the slugs. They will travel up the side of the house to get to what they can smell is up there.
