I recently bought a bee/ladybird house for my garden. I am pleased to say that the bees are making good use of it. Apparently it is only solitary bees that use these houses and I have leaf cutter bees. You will note from the photo that three of the holes have been blocked off by the bees and if you look closely you will just notice a bee entering the top hole with a piece of leaf for her nest. This is fascinating to me as I had not heard of leaf cutter bees before (only leaf cutter ants). Not sure if the ladybirds are using it at the moment. There doesn't seem to be many around in my garden this summer. Has anyone got a good number of ladybirds? Leaf cutter bee ( photo / image / picture from Gardengirl's Garden )
I haven't seen a single ladybird in the garden this year Pet. In saying that I don't appear to have the same amount of aphids either. Maybe the ladybirds are staying away and eating somewhere that has a better supply of food for them??
Thinking about it Eileen, I haven't seen many aphids this summer either. I thought maybe it was down to the amount of rainfall we have had, but perhaps the ladybirds have been at work after all
Nice little house,GG. I have oodles of ladybirds. I hope that they will hang around for the winter. I have a feeling that that little house you have is for the ladybirds to sleep in during the winter.
