Does anyone have any plants in their garden that particularly attract butterflies? My mom and I have been planting flowers and such in the backyard and really want some plants that will attract pretty butterflies this summer. I came across this article on bhg.com: http://tinyurl.com/2lcly3~ do any of you have experience with these plants? would love some first hand advice!! :D

Some of those plants I am not familiar with, others I have growing in my yard.
This site gives you many more plants that you can pick from, depending on what suits your garden and your area.
You could also check out their list of plants that are hosts to the catepillars, plant some of those and your garden will be filled with butterflies every year.
Check to see which butterflies are native to your area and plant for those.

If I could recommend ONE plant to attract butterflies it would be Asclepias Tuberosa *butterfly weed*. The name sounds ugly but it is really a pretty plant and the monarchs love it.

I've also been gardening to attract butterflies and hummingbirds. I've planted cosmos, echinacea, and zinnias too. I just got 3 butterfly bushes which I've heard are another MUST...they have a ways to grow so we'll see....

    :-D

Try Monarda, also referred to as Bee Balm.

I can't get that link to open for me.
I keep bees and plant my garden full of flowering plants for them. Of course the butterflies also feed on the same blooms.
Naturally our climate and plants are a bit different than where you live, but one bush that may work for you is the Buddleja davidii. Mine are literally covered in butterflies during the summer. They will absolutely grow where you live. You prune it around the Ides of March and other than that, it needs little attention.

    Good luck, meid.
