What a pretty yellow bloom. I hear these make great jam, too. Have you ever had it? or made it? I wouldn't begin to battle the spines to make it. I don't know the slightest thing about how to.

There's something magical or fascinating about seeing a cactus bloom. Maybe it's because something to "prickly" can produce something so pretty!

Thanx, carolyn keiper. I've never had the jam nor made it. This is the first time I've grown cactus as a matter of fact, but I'm going to try eating them raw (carefully of course).

Thanx, Droopy. I've been spiked a couple times at first, but I've learned to be more careful.

I agree cherylad. The cactus is mine and my wife has the more traditional flowering plants.

A nice cactus flower, I think the reflection of heat from that brick wall helped. The wall collects heat during the day and gives it out at night.Looks lovely and almost cute.

Thanx, chocolate. I've thought about that also, but I have another cactus across from that one (they are both on each side of the car garage door). They were both put there at the same time, and only that one bloomed. I'm starting to break off some ears to see if the promoting of growth will produce more flowering.

I think you use the fruit from the flowers to make the jam....but if this is the first one and that is the only plant you have...there probably won't be enough to make jam with

Yeah carolyn, I'll try the pear as is, and see what the following years bring me. I'm definitely going to cook the cactus pads though. I've had them in restaurants but never fresh like this.
