One of my aunt's gave me a start from a very tropical looking plant earlier this year. Her's is in a container so she can bring it inside during winter. It had to be at least 5 foot tall. She calls it her "dead bird plant" because the first time she saw it flower, she thought a bird had died an fell into it!
    :-D
Since my start is during pretty good, I went over to see if I could get a photo of her's to help ID it.
Her's had been broken off almost to nothing when the wind blew it over. :(
Here's mine now.... probably too early to ID it, but I thought I'd give it a shot.

I also got a start of a night blooming Cereus (from the nice man at the resale shop) that has finally decided to grow. And it sure reminds me of the one I got from my Aunt. EXCEPT the "mother plant" of this one was a big droopy hanging plant.

They must be in the same family, right? Something like a Christmas Cactus?
Any clue to what my mystery plant is? I'd hate to go through life calling it the "dead bird plant".
    :D

Good morning, your plant sure looks like a night blooming cereus to me, I have some and some cuttings off the same mother plant will flower during the day.Mine is growing in a large pot outside and is easily 6' tall, it can be very floppy if it has no support, I treat mine as a climber.

Wow Chocolate... those are most unusual flowers!
When you say your's is in a large pot... about what size is it? And do you have it tied up to a trellis?
Right now mine only gets direct sun for a couple of hours in the evenings. Is that good?
I think I'd like to have one grow upright if possible... and a hangy one.
How long do the blooms last?
I mean, If it blooms at night, would I be able to still see it in all it's glory in the morning?
    Thanks Chocolate!

Hi, it has been raining here, nice soft spring rain so I have only just managed to get an up to date photo of the size of the pot, not as big as I first thought, the roots are probably growing through the holes in the base but it doesnt matter because it is on the edge of my cacti garden. In one of the photos you will see the native rock orchid....dendrodroium speciosum, or Sydney rock orchid, ready to put on its spring show for about one month, weather permitting. Now that the cereus has reached that height it gets morning sun above the fence and then more sun in afternoon, really most of the day is in shade. Most cacti will flower here in shade.

So it will eventually have a wooden-like trunk?
Do they like to be a little root-bound?
You have such beautiful and unique flowers!
And congrats on getting some rain.

Good morning, I think that trunk is the result of growing in the shade and the plant reaching for the sun, it is a cactus after all, I have this piece in a pot, ugly thing I dont know why I keep it, I dont want to put it in the garden. It has long leafless branches too.I f I put it out in full sun it would probably flower. It has been in the pot for about 12mths I was trying to see what it is, but I know now and I will be giving it away at the garden club soon!

I spotted this new growth today. Do you think this is a new stalk?

I hate to agree... but yep... not the prettiest of plants is it?
I still can't get over that they are a cactus.
Maybe next year, when I move it to a bigger pot I'll find it a sunnier spot.
Thanks for the all info Chocolate!

Hi, yes Cherylad I am pretty sure that that stalk is one of those long things which wants to reach for the sky, the flowers show up on the edge of the paddles or leaves.....good luck.
