I love calla lilies (PS: Calla Lily) and I plant them in pots. With all the new beautiful colors the last couple years, I have quite a variety...my question is after they flower the flower head goes to seed, Are you suppose to cut them off so the bulb gets stronger , like a lot of other plants, or do you just leave them hang there? Sorry if I have asked this question here but couldn't find any post saying I have...
From what I read a while ago, cut the fading bloom off and gradually reduce the watering until the foliage dies off. Also, did you know that the plants contain a poisonous ingredient called oxalic acid? Keep them away from pets and children.
Thanks toni, I didn't know that about the poison in it, so many of the plants have it and I do try to watch the dogs when they are outside but you can't all the time..Sherry
Purpura, how about posting the suggestion in the Suggestion/Comments/Help forum. http://www.gardenstew.com/viewforum.php?f=18
Hi Sherry8, I always plant a couple of Calla in pots to give them an early start and early blooms for me. Yes, cut off seed stalk and I continue to water and feed just like i do the ones in the ground. If I don't plant the bulb, I keep it going until mid to late September. I cut off the tops first so they don't rip at the bulb. Wash and Let them air dry a couple of days and store them dig them all (including potted ones). I want my bulbs as big and strong as possible for next year and they can grow huge. Ron
