With the seam seen, and some flesh around the seed, wonder if it is in the pomegranite or rose family, and the casing has popped off now. Been looking, have not seen anything like it so far.

It looks like a member of the Allium family...perhaps a leek.

I think it is the inside of a Chinese Lantern seed pod. Or a Nicandra seed pod.

some interesting answers guys, but it looks like netty wins :) i thought that would of had people guessing for a bit longer. i obviously underestimated how much you guys know, which is alot. its a seed pod from the shoo fly plant or Nicandra physalodes . . . collected a few pods so i could try the seeds in spring. it usually has a protective skin if you like round the seeds, but my curiosity got the better of me and i sat there pain-stakingly peeling it away. :-D

I've taken the skin off a few as well, I guess that is why I knew what it was :)
