Years ago I bought a small tree that was grafted onto a salix rootstock. Now that the original shrub is long gone I now have a salix in its stead. It is in a fairly sheltered corner of the garden and partially shaded by the neighbour's huge flowering cherry.Just recently I have noticed it becoming a bit leggy, with most of the foliage at the ends of the branches. It is really pretty and I don't want to lose it but would prefer more foliage...

So,when and how do I go about it?

    Thank you :D

It sounds as though it needs more light. I'd try moving it to a more open space when it's dormant.

Agree, but would add that you may prune Salix as hard as you choose and indeed should. And the best time to do it is now.

Thank you both. The pruning will be much easier to tackle than moving it as it is in a very large container and both my husband and I have back problems.

Hmm I feel an outing with the secateurs :D
