I have some photos of one of the hawks that is visiting my bird pergola...taking snacks as he visits. I took these through the window so they are blurry. I think it might be a Coopers Hawk but do you think that this hawk only weighs 2 pounds max? I read that on a site and I think he is bigger than that... Is this a coopers Hawk? I live in Wisconsin. Sorry these are blurry but I couldn't get outside without scaring them away.. Now this is a smaller hawk that visits my yard..this was taken through the window also...
It's hard to tell from the photos, but it certainly could be...my bird book says they may show up at bird feeders in winter for food. The other one it may be is a Red-shouldered hawk (about the same size as a Cooper, with an orange-colored chest). I've had peregrine falcons by my bird feeders, and watched one nab a morning dove as I sat 10 feet away on my deck. We've also got a lot of eagles around, and the ice fishermen leave the fish guts behind for them to eat on the ice.
I love to watch the Hawks but have never been able to get a photo of one. Maybe it's a Broad-Winged Hawk?
Two pounds is a very good size for a bird. Their bones are hollow and lightweight. It IS a Coopers Hawk. The banded tail and rounded on the end are diagnostic. :-D Your little cutie is a kestral. :-D
I have done bird-watching in america a number of years ago and a hawk type that I recall was the sharp-shinned hawk. This one looks a bit like it to me because of the white feathers on the back and the stripes across the tail feathers. It's been a while, so I am not really sure.
Thank you everyone...The closest I could pick was the Coopers Hawk. To me he looks so big compared to all the other ones around here that is why I was not sure. Plus having taken the picture through the window it is blurry but I know he would of been gone by the time I went outside. Plus usually I have the dogs chase him off. My husband had just built it for me this last spring and yes we feed all year here. I get mostly hairy woodpeckers, finches of all types, sparrows, juncos, etc. right now. In the summer I have some different ones. I have Bluejays right now too.
Coopers do have a rounded tail like that. There are so many morphs of hawks they can be difficult to ID. Do you guess hes about 14" to 20" tall? Thats cooper size. Sharpies are a bit smaller. Rough legged red shouldered etc larger. I had a big guy hunting in my yard in the fall. I'm pretty sure he was rough legged;
