I'm sorry to post photos of a dead bird, but this guy looks like a beautiful bird, and I can't identify him(or Her). I thought that before disposing of the body, I should at least know what I'm disposing of. I found him or her, out there when I went out to grill some ribs for dinner. It was a peaceful evening, a breeze was dancing about over the water making interesting wave patterns, and Mimi joined me out there proving she is healing well. ( photo / image / picture from Calomaar's Garden ) Or he may have hit this one, but the reflection here isn't near as good as the first. ( photo / image / picture from Calomaar's Garden ) The breeze dancing on the water. ( photo / image / picture from Calomaar's Garden ) Mimi's looking good isn't she? ( photo / image / picture from Calomaar's Garden ) So is the meat, and I can say at this time, having eaten it, that it was. ( photo / image / picture from Calomaar's Garden )
Your mystery bird looks like a Belted Kingfisher Tom although I'm not up to speed with all the different species of these lovely birds. Mimi certainly looks wonderful now and I hope she continues to make progress. :-D
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belted_Kingfisher Okay, you are right...an adult male Belted Kingfisher. I've never seen one before, it's a very pretty bird. And yes, Mimi is looking really very good. You have been a great caregiver Tom
My first thought was Blue Jay, but he was not quite right. Kingfisher seems right, the large beak and the coloring. I haven't seen one here about, but he fits the description in the bird book. Trying to find a bird in the bird book is like using a dictionary to find the spelling of a particular word. If you can't spell it you can't find it. Thanks for the help, now I can deal with him and feel better about it. Tom
So sad. That sure does look like a kingfisher to me. We get quite a few of them around our lake here. I see them often perched on the power lines nearby.
Beautiful bird (RIP), Mimi looking great, water looks inviting, and the ribs ... they look delicious and you confimed they were!
