Does anybody know why some muskmelons are shiny as they grow and ripen? I have a few every year and I would like to know what causes it. There melons are flavorless, too. Any ideas? Their size is comparable to all the other melons in the patch.

Mart, I am not sure if all muskmelons have a netted rind or not, but I am referring to any variety that does have the netting on the rind,... mine is supposed to have the netting and a few of them are shiny in one spot or another and those just don't have good flavor.

At the end of the season we have a few that don`t have the netting but they are usually the small stunted ones. Are you growing a hybrid variety ?

I am sure it is a hybrid. I think it is Goddess, maybe. I was just wondering if anyone knew what/why they do this.

After I'm sure I have two or three melons per vine that will probably make it to full size, I cull the rest. Usually I get decent melons.

Years ago, I had an older neighbor who believed cantaloupes that ripened on a cloudy day would be less sweet and that's where the duds came from. I've always thought it was an old wives tale.
