Cardamom

    Hi all! This afternoon we are going to the garden center to get a few different herbs. And, one I'd really like to try is cardamom. Does anyone have any experience with this plant?

    Well Melissa...I almost had some experience with cardamom. What that means is that I wanted to grow a couple of plants in my greenhouse, but discovered that the plants get to be pretty big--so big in fact, that one or two would have filled-up the entire back end of the greenhouse, so I had to abandon the project. Growing them outside here was not an option.

    Gosh...I have such an incurable and overpowering addiction to cardamom. ;) I cook with it and make tea with it as a constituent. I could eat it every day. The idea of growing your own is really attractive.

    Are you planning on growing them outside?

    They didn't have them anymore when we had gone to the nursery.... :( I'll keep my eyes open for the plants in the future though.

    I really like cardamom too. I had never had it before and found a recipe for cardamom cookies and me and my husband really liked the flavor. I didn't know you can make tea with it though..that's interesting. I'll have to look that up!

    Hi Melissa, I have had luck with them and I agree with Sjoerd, they are a large plant. They are used a lot here. Everyone drinks cardamom coffee (I don't like that at all but do like to use it in cooking.)

    Cardamom is easy easy to grow

    I have my cardamom outside, in a pretty shady area. It may get some direct sunlight in the afternoon. It has gotten to cold the past few winters for it to bloom here, and like most gingers freezes to the ground but comes back almost as soon as the frost is gone. It is easy to propagate from rhizomes, and if it was not in a planter, it might be invasive.

    I use the leaves to wrap fish and other things in, and sear them, steam them, have wrap tamales up in them, and made teas with the leaves, or used them to infuse in stocks.

    It does very well in a pot and as a house plant, so you could put it out in the summer and bring it in in the winter, near a window. I meant to do that this winter and see if it would bloom, but I forgot and it froze to the ground....

    Ooh, I never thought to use them for tamales! I am going to try that.

    Cardamom-hmm sounds like something I may want to try. There is a small plant nursery down the road, sometimes she has some herbs. I'll have to take a look and see if she might have this. What a good idea-thanks.
